RARE J.W. Haynie & Co. Check c.1875-78, Virginia City & Bodie Mining Connection For Sale

RARE - A unique and rather rarepiece of early western mining history during the peak of the Comstock Lode silver boom in Nevada. This unused"remainders" (check), stub attached with the prominent lumber baron J.W. Haynie &Co. printed in vibrant red, the"oriental" or exotic font combined with the distinct typography, the presence of a printed (not a add-on or placed) Civil War tax revenue stamp imprintcombined with the legendary agency of theBank of California dates this item to 1875 to 1878.The Civil War revenue tax was officially repealed in 1883, confirming this pre-printed check from the mid to late 1870's representative of the peak of the Comstock mining era in Virginia City which J.W. Haynie was directly involved in the financial hub of the Nevada silver boom.

Hanie & Co. (J.W. Haynie) was involved in local prospect and mining concerns supplying essentialinfrastructure like lumber and timber to the active mining camps in Virginia City and during Bodie'speak boom for decades.Later, because timber was completely cleared out of the Virginia City area by the late 1870s, J.W. Haynie and his business partners, like railway tycoon H.M. Yerington turned their sights south to the untouched Jeffrey pine forests near Mono Lake. In 1881, they founded the "Bodie Wood and Lumber Company" (Mono Mills) to send wood up to the exploding gold mining camp of Bodie via a narrow gauge railroad.

Condition - NEAR MINT. This would be graded as "MINT" if not for the "flea bit" creases. Un-used with stub attached, no tears, stains, writing, discoloring or wear seen. (see images).
