Holmesina isa very close relative of armadillos that lived in the southeast U.S. during thePliocene and Pleistocene before going extinct 12 thousand years ago. Likemodern armadillos, they had a flexible shell made up of boney plates calledscutes. Unlike modern armadillos, which are omnivores, Holmesina was anherbivore and couldn’t curl up into a ball. It was also much larger than modernarmadillos reaching lengths of 6 and a half feet and weighing 220 pounds.
