RARE-Antique Burgess & Leigh Flow Blue Apsley Plants Gravy Boat & Underplate Set: $225.00
Product Overview: Up for sale is a stunning, highly collectible antique Gravy Boat and matching Underplate (Drip Plate) by Burgess & Leigh (later known as Burleigh Ware). Produced at the historic Middleport Pottery in Burslem, England, this set features the beautiful and rarely seen \"Apsley Plants\" multi-color floral pattern.Pattern & Design Details: - Manufacturer: Burgess & Leigh (B&L), England
- Pattern: Apsley Plants
- Style: Victorian Flow Blue / Gaudy Ironstone Transferware
- Est. Production Era: Late 19th Century to Early 20th Century (c. 1877–1919)
- Aesthetics: Vibrant cobalt blue flow printing base adorned with intricate rust-orange/red hand-painted floral highlights, rich green foliage, and elegant gold gilt trim accents.
- Technique: The piece is made of durable ironstone and decorated using traditional tissue transfer printing
- Production Site: Since 1889, all such pieces have been produced at the historic Middleport Pottery, which remains the only factory in the world still using the tissue transfer method
Before 1891, English potteries rarely included the country name on their marks. However, following the passage of the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890 in the United States, all imported goods were required to clearly state their country of origin. Burgess & Leigh added \"ENGLAND\" to their \"B & L\" stamp immediately in 1891 to comply with export laws. The factory transitioned away from the simple \"B & L\" monogram toward the comprehensive \"Burleigh\" branding by the 1920s. Condition Details: Both pieces are structurally sound with no chips, cracks, or repairs. Both the gravy boat and underplate feature matching \"B&L England\" backstamps from the 1891–1919 era. Please note that the underplate features an original factory transfer misprint missing the letter \"T\" in \"Plants.\" The underplate shows light, age-appropriate glaze crazing and some minor brown staining along the outer scalloped rim and underside foot ring, typical for antique ironstone of this vintage. Please review the high-resolution photos for a close-up look at the patina.
