From the Preface:
"Time has a way of passing us by, and the older one becomes, the quicker it seems to go. Just yesterday it was 1906 and a small Catskill Mountain short line railroad began running its trains up and down the valley of the East Branch of the Delaware River in New York State. It is now 2006 and I cannot envision a more opportune time to present a book about the Delaware & Northern Railroad and her predecessor, the Delaware & Eastern, than on the occasion of her one-hundredth birthday.
"The Delaware & Northern is not widely known in the grand scheme of railroad history, but it has created many fond memories for those who remember it. For nearly forty years the small steam locomotives and the Brill doodlebug, affectionately called the "Red Heifer," ran up and down the valley carrying passengers and freight for the communities that lay along the river's banks. It originally was envisioned as a major coal hauler from the Pennsylvania coalfields to the capital district of New York State, but for many reasons it was a vision that never materialized. Instead, it became a trunk line of 38 miles in length connecting the New York Ontario & Western at East Branch with the Ulster & Delaware at Arkville in the Catskills. A branch line also ran nine miles up the hill to the village of Andes. The entire railroad lay within the confines of Delaware County. The Delaware & Northern came to an end in 1942 when the city of New York decided to build the Pepacton Reservoir, which eventually inundated nineteen miles of the railroad."
This is not an in-depth technical analysis of the railroad, but rather a profusely illustrated look at the Delaware & Northern and its predecessor.Contents:
