M472 Published Indian War-Era Cologne-Style Bottle – Fort Pembina, Dakota Territory
Description: Excellent excavated example of an Indian War-era cologne-style bottle recovered from Fort Pembina in the Dakota Territory. This specimen is one of several recovered during documented privy excavations at the site, which yielded a wide range of exceptionally well-preserved artifacts dating from the Civil War through the Indian War period.
Established in 1870–1871 just west of the Red River, Fort Pembina served to monitor Sioux activity and protect settlers along the Red River corridor. Troops stationed at the post also participated in operations associated with the Fenian Raids.
This bottle measures just under 5” in height. It appears to have been blown in a hinge mold, with a mold seam running diagonally across the shoulders. The front and back feature flat panels, while the sides are rounded. The distinctive lip is smooth and appears to have been partially tooled. The bottle survives in excellent excavated condition, with no major chips or cracks. Several air bubbles of varying sizes are present in the glass from manufacture.
Most notably, this exact specimen is illustrated in Excavations at Fort Pembina. It was recovered from Feature 20, identified by Tom Askjem as the \"Second Sink for the Fort Hospital.” The distinctive lip and the air bubble to the right of the front flat panel allow this bottle to be positively identified as the published example.
An outstanding, well-documented artifact with published provenance from a U.S. military post on the northern frontier.
