The Bl’cher Sabre is designed on the model of an English saber used by the Light Dragoons from 1796, which was already equipped with a stirrup-shaped grip, also characteristic of the Prussian evolution of light weapons. The sabre M 1811 is commonly referred to as bl’cher Sabre. Generalfeldmarschall Gebhard Leberecht von Bl’cher, whose fellow soldiers nicknamed Marschall Vorw’rts or Pascholl after the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in 1813, was the most popular commander during the German Campaign against Napoleon. In 1826, the city of Berlin erected a statue in his memory: His effigy holds the handle of an M 1811 saber, lowered to the ground. This saber was the standard weapon of the Prussian light cavalry in 1813/14. The Prussian Hussars, as well as the dragons, ulanos, and artillery gunners on horseback were equipped with bl’cher length: approx. 100 cm.
