Authentic Pre-Columbian Mexican Red-on-Buff Pottery Bowl
Culture / Region: Central or Western Mexico (Coyotlatelco or Balsas River Basin tradition)
Period: Epiclassic to Early Postclassic period (circa 700–1200 CE)
Provenance: Formally from the estate collection of Gerald M. McCue (1928–2026), renowned architect, former Chair of Architecture at UC Berkeley, and longtime Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Diameter: 4.25 inches by 4 3/8 inches- Height: 1.25 inches to 1 3/8 inches
- Interior Depth: Approximately 7/8 inches
Design and Material:
- Material: Low-fired buff-colored terracotta earthenware.
- Painting: Natural iron-oxide red mineral slip paint.
- Motif: Solid red-painted rim with concentric framing bands. The interior features symmetrical clusters of stylized, fluid wavy lines representing water or wind.
Condition and Authenticity:
- Displays clear physical markers of ancient age including micro-cavities, structural pitting on the underside, faint mineral encrustations, and honest, naturally eroded surface slip.
