Antique RPPC – Melwood Auditorium, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Real photo multi-view advertising postcard for the Melwood Auditorium at Center and Neville Streets, Pittsburgh. Six labeled photos surround a central advertising panel: the Kitchen, an exterior view titled Melwood showing the building against a wooded hillside, the Dining Room, the Reception Room, the Euchre Room set with card tables and chairs, and The Auditorium decorated with bunting and flags, plus The Lawn with a small tower. The center panel reads \"Open All Year, Get Dates Now,\" names W. T. Beane as manager, and lists the streetcar lines that stopped there: Craig St., Bloomfield, Center & Larimer, Center and East Liberty, and Negley. The imprint of the Keil Specialty Co. appears at the bottom of the panel. The back is printed in purple with the hall\'s Special Summer Rates of $30 to $40 per night, along with \"Electric Fans & Grove,\" the phone number 1525-J Schenley, and the address Centre Ave. and Neville St., Pittsburg, Pa.
Postmarked February 28, 1911, with a Pittsburg, Pa. Street Car R.P.O. flag cancel marked Trip 7, on a 1-cent green Franklin stamp, and addressed to St. Peter & Paul Casino within the city. Streetcar Railway Post Offices operated in only a handful of major American cities, with clerks sorting and postmarking mail aboard the cars, making this cancel a notable feature on top of the card\'s advertising content. A great piece for collectors of Pittsburgh topographical postcards, streetcar and RPO postal history, or early dance hall and entertainment advertising.
