Original 1892 Philadelphia Department of Public Works, Bureau of Highways municipal notices concerning sidewalk improvements and surface drainage.
This group of historic documents includes official Surface Drainage Notices and a Footway or Sidewalk Notice issued in July 1892, directing property owners to complete required public improvements within thirty days.
The notices identify properties at 249, 251, and 253 North 10th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and feature original handwritten entries, service dates, and the signature of city official M. Pallon.
The surface drainage notices required underground connections to the municipal sewer system to prevent water from draining across public sidewalks. The sidewalk notice concerns curb and pavement improvements.
The reverse sides contain printed Philadelphia municipal ordinances explaining the legal requirements, property owners’ responsibilities, and procedures for enforcement.
An interesting collection of nineteenth-century Philadelphia municipal history documenting urban infrastructure, sanitation, street maintenance, and property ownership.
