Petrous Regout De Sphinx Religious Plate Holland Italy L’Anno Santo 1934 Reduced: $19.95
The Royal Sphinx factory was established by Petrus Regout in 1834 in Maastricht, Holland. In 1879 the image of the sphinx started to be used as a company mark and logo. By 1836 he had established both a glass and pottery factory in Maastricht - this grew to be one of the most important Dutch tableware producers from the latter half of the 19th century until World War II. Since 1899 the company was called De Sphinx. They made Delft and Flow Blue among other designs. This plate was made to commemoratean event:L’Anno Santo (Holy Year) in Fascist Italy 1933—34You can see from the pictures that the place on the back of the plate that would have had string or wire to hang the place has been broken. I assume it fell off a wall because there is a crack. It can be seen in the pictures 4 & 8. On the back you can see it, and feel it with your fingernail. On the front it is not so evident but you can feel it. The price reflects the damage. It is signed on the back with the names of the designers/painters. Incised is an arrow, a number 9 1/2 and an M or W.It is 10\" across. It has, in roman numerals, the dates 1934 - 1935 on the front. Between Easter 1933 and Easter 1934, Rome was the venue for two major and potentially rival efforts to seize history for popular use. The Roman Catholic Church, under the rule of Pope Pius XI, held a supernumerary Anno Santo, Holy Year or Jubilee, the first since the signature of the Lateran pacts with the Fascist regime in 1929. That agreement had formally ended the Pope’s ‘imprisonment in the Vatican’, permitting the Church publicly to deploy a greater array of Rome’s religious pasts than had been possible since the Risorgimento. Meanwhile, in October 1932, Mussolini’s dictatorship had opened its Exhibition of the Fascist Revolution, there making with stridently modernist dynamism its own claims to carry Rome’s histories in its hands. Many ‘pilgrims’ in 1933—34 attended both Catholic and Fascist events.
