Interesting lot of 5 letters and one legal deposition dated from the 1850s-1870s. All are addressed to William Cary of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, with townships given as Carbondale or Greenfield (both became part of Lackawanna County later on).
These are all original, handwritten documents - not reprints!I\'ve done a little research, and I believe this is William Cary or Carey (ca. 1796-1880) son of John Barnabas Cary (1753-1826) and Lucy McKay (1770-1863). He lived in Luzerne County most of his life.
Lot includes the following:
- 3 letters to William Cary from Alexander McKay of Aurora, Erie County, New York, 1850s. One is addressed \"Dear Nephew,\" and I assume this was an uncle or other close relative on Cary\'s mother\'s side.
- Letter to William Cary from Dr. Silvara, undated. I believe Dr. Silvara was Joseph W. Silvara (1830-1864), son of Portuguese immigrant Emanuel Silvara (1770-1863). Dr. Silvara also settled in Luzerne County but died at a young age; this letter was obviously very important to Cary\'s family, going by the inscriptions on the back.
- Letter to William Cary from W. Leids of Dickinson College\'s \"Institute of Penmanship and Telegraphy,\" 1875. Suitably florid handwriting.
- Deposition in a legal case over a land dispute of some kind, 1875. Cary was the plaintiff, E. Atwater the defendant.
