Pair of Japanese Kutani porcelain sake cups featuring detailed hand-painted figural scenes with extensive gilt decoration.
Each cup has a white glazed interior decorated with an elaborate Japanese figural composition in polychrome enamels and gold. The exteriors feature a dark ground with raised floral and foliate decoration, with additional gilt accents along the rims and footed bases.
Both pieces are marked 九谷 (Kutani) on the underside.
Measurements:
Approximately 2" diameter x 1.25" high each
The cups are coordinating rather than identical. One has a rounded form, while the other features a distinctive lobed/scalloped rim.
They are known to date to at least 1960 or earlier and may be considerably older. No attempt has been made to attribute them to a specific kiln, artist, or exact period.
Pre-owned condition with age-related surface wear, including areas of wear and loss to the gilding and decoration. Please examine all photos carefully for the exact condition of each piece.
