Beautiful, highly collectible pair of 2 genuine antique hand painted English earthenware plates from the "Baronial" series, produced by Bristol Art Pottery (Pountney & Co.) during the late Victorian / Edwardian era (circa 1900-1910). Designed by renowned pottery artist John Barker (J.B.), these pieces feature his signature heavy "leaded-line" style depicting Puritan/Pilgrim figures, complete with classic old-world proverbial mottoes. These make fantastic display pieces for collectors of English mottoware, Edwardian art pottery, or historical Americana/Puritan decor. The set includes two distinct plates:
Plate 1: Features the motto "It's a good horse that never stumbles"
Plate 2: Features the motto "Learn to live and die well"
Maker's Marks & Authenticity: The reverse sides feature the original impressed stamp reading "BRISTOL 'BARONIAL' POTTERY, J.B." along with the handwritten pattern/mold code "B 64" painted in underglaze blue.
Condition (Please Read & View Photos Carefully):
These plates are over 110 years old and are being sold as a pair with the following specific condition notes:
Plate 1 ("Good horse..."): Very good antique condition. Features some minor, beautiful glaze crazing consistent with age, and a slight factory blue paint smudge/underglaze bleed on the back rim from the original hand-painting process. No structural cracks or chips.
Plate 2 ("Learn to live..."): Features a through-and-through structural hairline crack running from the outer rim inward (visible on both the front and back faces—please see close-up photos). The plate is still structurally together and perfect for display in a cabinet or on a wall hanger, but should be handled with care.
Both plates show typical, natural aging/darkening to the earthenware body which adds to their wonderful antique character.
