PHYSICIAN David Hosack SIGNED Medical Receipt / JSA COA- PHYSICIAN David Hosack SIGNED 1835 Medical Receipt -- “To advice and attendance” to “Mrs Hicks” in NEW YORK -- TREASURY Sec’y Alexander Hamilton’s PERSONAL Doctor -- A WITNESS to DUEL with BURR + treated wounded Hamilton -- Medical Receipt Comes With a “Letter of Authenticity” from JSA -

VERY RARE medical document SIGNED / AUTOGRAPHED by the renowned PHYSICIAN + BOTANIST David Hosack, a medical receipt for a “Mrs Hicks”. Medical receipt is written ENTIRELY in Hosack’s own hand, dated January 1st 1834 (at New York), and is genuinely SIGNED by Hosack at the conclusion.

The medical receipt was for “advice and attendance” for Mrs. Hicks in February and May of 1832, at a cost of $20, and in January and February of 1833, at a cost of $51. Doctor Hosack’s total charge to Mrs. Hicks for his medical “advice and attendance” was $71. As a longtime collector of early American medical ephemera and documents, I would consider David Hosack’s medical receipts to be exceptionally rare.

MEDICAL RECEIPT comes with and will be shipped with a “Letter of Authenticity” from JSA (see SCANS).

DAVID HOSACK (1769 - 1835) was an eminent American physician, botanist, and medical educator. He matriculated at both Columbia College and Princeton, where he graduated in 1789. While at Columbia, Hosack studied medicine privately, beginning a medical apprenticeship with Dr. Richard Bayley. At Princeton, he attended medical lectures by Drs. Samuel Bard and Benjamin Rush. Hocack enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania medical school in 1790 and received his medical degree in 1791. Thereafter, he continued his medical studies in Europe at the University of Edinburgh. Hosack returned to the United States in 1794 and opened a medical practice in New York City. Around 1795, he entered into a partnership with Dr. Samuel Bard and assumed sole responsibility for the practice when Bard retired in 1799. He would establish himself as the personal physician to several politically important families. Hosack was a professor of botany and later a professor of medicine at Columbia College. In 1801, he purchased 20 acres of land in New York City and opened the Elgin Botanic Garden, the first botanic garden established in this country. Hosack attended to the fatally injured Alexander Hamilton following his DUEL with Aaron Burr in 1804, in Hosack’s capacity as Hamilton’s personal physician.

DUEL (Alexander Hamilton vs Aaron Burr) - as Alexander Hamilton’s PERSONAL Physician, David Hosack was present at the DUEL between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr on July 11th 1804. As dueling was illegal at that time, Hosack had to profess ignorance of the duel to avoid prosecution and therefore stood just out of view. After the shots were fired, he rushed to Hamilton’s side to tend to him and found a bullet had shattered one of his ribs, tore thru his liver and diaphragm, and splintered a vertebra. While Hosack administered medical care, Alexander Hamilton’s wounds proved fatal; and he passed away 31 hours later.

CONDITION: document is guaranteed authentic and original (NOT a copy). It measures about 4 x 6 3/8 inches in size and is in fine overall condition, with a bold signature by Hosack. There is a single horizontal fold and several vertical folds. There is some edge roughness and some edge tears along the very top + bottom of the vertical folds only (the largest about a ¼ inch in length along the top and the largest about an inch in length along the bottom). There are also two small tape repairs on the backside of the document, along two of the bottom vertical folds (see SCANS). The signature / autograph of DOCTOR David Hosack is guaranteed authentic. Winning buyer to pay $15 for shipping, postage & INSURANCE. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Everything we sell is packaged with the utmost care. Please read my response over the last 25 years. The comments are often – the best packaging I have ever seen or “bullet proof” packaging. We do NOT offer returns for one simple reason. In the past, I have had some buyers purchase items from me and then proceed to shop them around during the return period to try and make a fast profit, without any financial risk. After they were unsuccessful, they returned the item to me. This information, however, made it back to me from different people I know who were directly offered my item immediately after I had sold it and before it was returned to me for a refund. offer with confidence! You will receive the exact item pictured and in the same condition as described in my listing.
