Great White Fleet Postcard
This original color postcard depicts USS Kearsarge (BB-5), a U.S. Navy battleship shown with a patriotic eagle and crossed flags. The ship’s name, KEARSARGE, appears faintly across the bow. The front includes a 1906 copyright credit to Muller.
Kearsarge served with the U.S. Atlantic Fleet during the 1907–1909 cruise commonly known as the Great White Fleet voyage. The fleet traveled from Hampton Roads around the world, visiting ports in the Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Mediterranean before returning to Hampton Roads. The voyage took place during President Theodore Roosevelt’s administration, although Roosevelt did not accompany the fleet.
The reverse carries a printed advertisement from Eugene Lee of Bellevue, Washington, offering lists of people in other countries interested in exchanging souvenir postcards. This period postcard-exchange advertisement may appeal to collectors of naval history, military postcards, Great White Fleet memorabilia, and early postcard collecting.
