The is an original M1898 (very light weight - 1 lb.) Infantry Khaki ID’d belonging to Captain William Horton, who fought in the Cuba Campaign during the Spanish-American War.
**Captain William E. Horton at the outbreak of the Spanish American War with Spain in Cuba was appointed in his initial posting as adjutant of the 1st District of Columbia Volunteer Infantry, stationed in Tampa Florida.
He was assigned to the staff of General Hawkins and sailed with the first expedition for Cuba, where he took part in the fighting outside Santiago.
During the fighting in San Juan Hill he participated in the fight around the outside of Santiago near San Juan Hill.
Following hostilities with Spain, he was dispatched to the Philippines. Later in life earning the rank of General.

This is a very unique coat. Being a collector, this coat shows originality.
- It has the pleated 1” cuff in back.
- The uniform is extremely light weight, only weighing 15 oz.
- the blue infantry cuffs throughout the uniform is extremely light weight and sewn into the coat for its cuffs and not on the usual khaki flaps.
I’ve seen earlier coats made like this.
- The buttons were sewn into the coat original to the coat with no benchmarks.

This is a very sought after collectible coat.
I believe this coat was not made in the US, but made in Cuba.
Horton before leaving for Cuba would have been on staff (Adjutant, black cuffs & tabs.) being immediately mustered out to Cuba, there probably was not the time to have an infantry uniform made with the correct color. It was a short war, just over three months. It’s an extremely light coat.
I have a cavalry khaki, very light weight in a similar situation. The yellow cuffs and tabs are sewn on. The workmanship on a lot of these uniforms was careful!
There is mothing throughout the blue felted cuffs. Please see as pictured.
