Original 1901 Darius Kinsey photograph "The Edgecombe Stump House"
Offered here is one of Darius Kinsey's most popular photographs, taken in 1901, known as "The Stump House", or, "The Edgecomb Stump House".A family of Swedish immigrants came to Edgecomb, in Snohomish County, in the late 19th century. They hollowed out the stump of a huge cedar tree , about 22 feet in diameter - they put on a roof, pierced it with a stove pipe, and lived in it until completing construction of their house. Then it was maintained as an office or a place to get away and be alone for a while.Kinsey has titled it "Residence of an Early Settler in Washington". From the University of Washington's , Kinsey Brothers Digital Collection: "Darius Kinsey was the most important and prolific photographer of logging activities in the Pacific Northwest." Often using an 11x14 Eastman View camera, he photographed the entire logging process: early mornings in logging camps; the fallers posed with their axes, cross-cut saws and springboards; buckers crosscutting fallen timber; loading operations with steam donkey engines and ginpoles; logging railroads hauling their loads to Northwest mills. His images form a visual history of logging: from skid road logging with horses and sleds at the turn of the century to Diamond-T logging trucks and high-lead logging operations in the 1920s."
Good condition with expected wear for its age, measures 11" x 14".
