Lot of six original March 1952 color slides documenting an oil-drilling operation in New Mexico.
The images show several close views of the rig, including the steel derrick, drilling machinery, interior equipment, pipe, pulley and lifting components. The handwritten mounts identify the subjects as an oil derrick, oil well and related rig equipment, all dated March 1952.
These are unusual early industrial photographs from New Mexico’s expanding postwar oil industry. Commercial oil production had already been established in the state for several decades, with southeastern New Mexico becoming a major production area following the development of the Hobbs field.
The slides are mounted in blue Mercury mounts.
These are one-of-a-kind original slides—not duplicates—taken by an amateur photographer.
