Oregon Coast Agatized Petrified Wood, 5+ lbs, Agate Veins, Ideal for Lapidary:
$115.00

This listing is for a solid, dense piece of Oregon Coast agatized petrified wood with several agate veins in varying sizes running throughout. There are additional pockets of agate along with druzy crystals that are more evident under a bright light & closer examination. There is also a pocket of dark blue chalcedony visible from the surface. I suspect this would be a great piece to cut & polish.
Weight: 5 lbs & 2 oz (2,336 g).Measurements: 6\" x 5\" x 4.5\"
The last 8 pictures show this piece wet to highlight color & detail.
Self-collected in southern Lincoln County, Oregon.
Approximate age: 15-30 million years-old.
HISTORY:
This petrified wood is part of the remnants of ancient trees from the Miocene Era. During the long-term process lasting millions of years called petrification, the wood structure is completely transformed into mineral stone. The petrification process involves the gradual cellular replacement of decayed organic material by quartz crystals like agate, jasper, opal or citrine causing the variety of colors that exist within petrified wood.
The petrified wood in this area of Oregon was once either a variety of softwoods or hardwood like Alder, Myrtlewood, Sycamore, Birch and, rarely, the occasional prehistoric palm tree. Trees from an ancient forest were washed into rivers or lakes by various geologic events, then buried in sediments with the presence of volcanic ash in the anaerobic (oxygen-free) environment. The groundwater dissolved the silica from the ash and the porous wood structure absorbed the silica-rich water. Over time, the wood tissue dissolved and was replaced with minerals. This type of fossilization preserves the wood remarkably well allowing us to easily recognize fine details including growth rings, veins and bark.
