Antique Native American pipe tomahawk (pipe axe) with spontoon-style blade, Lakota Sioux 1800's.

This is a combination smoking pipe and hatchet. The long dark hardwood handle is fitted with applied sheet silver bands and triangular geometric inlays secured by iron rivets/studs. File branding is seen along the haft. The head features a forged iron spontoon blade (pointed, leaf- or diamond-shaped) with a large heart-shaped piercing surrounded by punch marks, plus scrolled basal processes or "quillons". Forged pipe bowl with ribbed decoration. Additional engraved motifs (stars and radiating designs) appear on the head, and the top cap is fitted with five round brass tacks. A clean out plug is seen. There is a small superficial crack, does not affect the integrity of the tomahawk.

Pipe tomahawks of this type were used by various Native American groups (and produced as trade items) as both functional tools/weapons and important ceremonial or prestige objects. The spontoon blade form and heart cutout are distinctive decorative features found on finer examples.

Condition: Solid antique piece with attractive dark patina on the wood and aged surfaces on the metal. Shows expected wear from age and use, including surface oxidation, some rust on rivets, minor wood checking/cracks (visible at the head), and wear to the inlays. Blade and bowl remain intact. Please examine all photos carefully.
