Presented here is an extraordinary 9.9-pound solid stone ceremonial chalice associated with the greater Ojuelos de Jalisco artifact mystery.
The vessel is carved from a dense black stone visually consistent with material repeatedly observed throughout larger Ojuelos tablets, masks, ceremonial objects, and mosaic-style pieces documented during my research.
At nearly 10 pounds, this is an extremely substantial object. The body, pedestal, rim, and central chamber are formed from solid stone.
MATERIAL & CONDITION
The dark stone displays extensive surface wear, scratches, mineral variation, small chips, handling marks, and aging characteristics.
Importantly, I want to be transparent about later modifications.
Several white inlays around the upper rim show visible adhesive residue. One area even appears to preserve debris or a fingerprint-like impression within the adhesive. Because of this, I believe at least some of these white elements may have been added or reset more recently.
Some engravings may also represent different periods of workmanship. The underlying stone vessel appears considerably older to me based on its material and construction, while the exact age of every engraved element cannot presently be established.
This layered history is part of what makes the piece so interesting.
13 UPPER SYMBOLS / POSSIBLE LUNAR CONNECTION
Around the upper rim are 13 distinct symbolic positions or inlays.
Thirteen is an important number in many calendrical and ceremonial traditions. It can also evoke the approximately 13 lunar cycles associated symbolically with a solar year.
It is therefore interesting to consider whether these upper positions could represent moons, celestial markers, ceremonial divisions, or another cyclical system.
This remains an interpretation rather than a confirmed translation.
CEREMONIAL USE
The interior contains considerable ash and burnt residue, showing that the vessel has actually been used for burning material.
Sacred vessels and burners have long been used throughout Mesoamerica for ceremonial substances including copal and other aromatic resins.
Exactly when this chalice was used, by whom, and for what purpose cannot presently be determined, but the physical residue demonstrates genuine use rather than purely decorative display.
ENGRAVED NARRATIVE
The exterior contains an unusual sequence of imagery.
One section appears to show a circular or planetary form crossed by a repeating wrapped pattern. The design strongly resembles the mummy-like wrapping or sacred-bundle imagery repeatedly observed on other Ojuelos pieces.
An elongated humanoid figure appears to interact with or emerge beside this form.
The figure has an elongated head and possible crown or headdress.
Another major symbol shows a triangle or pyramid containing a central eye. The elongated figure appears to place its hands toward this structure.
Nearby, another seated humanoid appears to hold an oval or egg-shaped object carrying the same wrapped pattern seen within the larger circular form.
The figure's limbs also contain similar banded markings.
Viewed together, the imagery could symbolically suggest a transmission sequence:
A celestial or planetary source.
An elongated being.
An eye or pyramid representing knowledge or illumination.
A second figure receiving an egg, seed, sacred bundle, or encoded object.
This could represent concepts involving creation, initiation, knowledge, consciousness, celestial transmission, or movement between realms.
