Spectacular armor breastplate from the 17th Century, 60 years war (1618-1648). This breastplate has a dent from a musket test caused by an armorer shooting from a specified distance with a musket. Measures approximately 16 1/2” high and 14” across. Weighs in excess of 10 pounds. There are two integral hooks at the waist (for the purpose of securing a leather belt that holds the front plate and back plate together) and two shoulder strap studs. There are lining holes around the edge which would have been used to stitch or secure a protective fabric or leather inside of the armor.
There is an inventory number 1354. (With a period), painted on the inside as well as an old tag reading, “17th Century Musketeer’s Breastplate used in the Thirty Years War. From the collection of Archduke Eugen, in the armory of the fortress Hohenwerfen near Salzburg, Austria.” Inventory numbers from that collection were painted in white or red on the interior of the piece. Also an old sale tag with sale numbers from a New York dealer.
There is visible steel delamination which is a reliable indicator of 17th century armor manufacturing.
