The Spanish War Service Medal is an official medal of the United States Army which was established by an act of the U.S. Congress on 9 July 1918 (40Stat. 873). The medal recognizes those members of the Army who performed activeduty during the Spanish-American War, but did not qualify for the SpanishCampaign Medal. The primary purpose forthe creation of the Spanish War Service Medal was to recognize units of theArmy which had performed homeland defense in the United States during the yearsof the Spanish-American War. The award was also presented extensively to membersof the United States National Guard who had been federalized for activemilitary duty but had not been deployed to actual combat in theSpanish-American War. To be awarded theSpanish War Service Medal, a service member must have served on active duty inthe United States Army between the dates of 20 April 1898 and 11 April 1899.
The medal has its original ribbon and wrap broachwith a rotating catch. It is numbered onthe rim in the six o’clock position, \"21739\".
Both the planchet and ribbon are in very good condition but do show somelight storage age. Please be sure toview the pictures I have posted and judge condition for yourself.
