📌 DESCRIPTION

This NROL-97 National Reconnaissance Office challenge coin commemorates a major milestone in U.S. national-security spaceflight, the first NRO mission launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy. The October 1, 2026 mission combined classified reconnaissance operations with imagery recognizing the 25th anniversary of September 11 and America’s 250th anniversary, giving this coin an unusually layered historical and aerospace identity.

The colorful mission-emblem side displays a lighthouse casting a broad beam across a coastal night scene beneath the Latin motto “Orbem Mundi Mutandum Conservare.” The artwork incorporates a beam aligned with 9 and 11, four prominent stars, a crescent moon, coastal terrain, and the mission designation NROL-97, creating a visually detailed September 11 memorial composition.

The reverse places a raised SpaceX Falcon Heavy at the center of an American flag design, with the triple-core rocket rising through sculpted exhaust. Large 25 Years lettering references the 25th anniversary of September 11, while the outer inscription “Celebrating 250 Years of Independence” connects the mission to the United States Semiquincentennial.

Its octagonal profile, substantial relief, multi-color enamel, and combination of NRO, SpaceX, September 11, and U.S. anniversary imagery make this an especially interesting crossover piece for intelligence, aerospace, spaceflight, and military challenge coin collectors.
