• Please check back regularly as I'm always adding new Walton Griest (1858–1929) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania who served from March 4, 1909, until his death on December 5, 1929. Born in Christiana, Pennsylvania, Griest graduated from the Millersville State Normal School in 1876 and spent much of his early career in education, serving as a member of the Lancaster city school board for twenty-four years. Before his election to Congress, Griest worked as a newspaper editor for the Lancaster Inquirer from 1882 to 1888, served as a chief clerk in the county commissioner's office, and was a member of the Pennsylvania Tax Commission and secretary of state of Pennsylvania from 1899 to 1903. As a congressman for twenty years, Griest represented Lancaster County through eleven consecutive Congresses, serving as a delegate to every Republican National Convention from 1896 to 1928. His tenure in Congress spanned a pivotal period in American history marked by significant debates over Women's Suffrage, Prohibition, and United States involvement in World War I.
