From the private collection of Tim Gagnon - KSCartist aka \"The Patch Guy.\"Friendship 7 50th Anniversary patch
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first American to orbit the Earth and John Glenn’s first flight into space on February 20, 1962 aboard the Mercury spacecraft he named “Friendship 7” and painted on the Mercury capsule by Cece Bibby, illustrated at the top of the design.
Patch Description:
The dark blue outer border and background and the red inner border are Marine Corps colors; an homage to John Glenn being a Marine.
The zero in the number 50 is composed of the Earth, taken from a painting I did in 2000. The orbital trajectory and Mercury capsule orbiting the number ‘50’ is from the STS-95 mission emblem; Glenn’s last spaceflight. The 50th anniversary date is displayed.
Seven stars represent the Mercury 7 astronauts with the symbol of Project Mercury and the astronaut pin, depicted on the left and right, respectively.
NOTE: Astronaut Jon McBride arranged for me to gift Senator Glenn with this patch in 2012 which is now part of theJohn Glenn Collectionis housed at theOhio State University Archives Buildingin Columbus, Ohio.
