VIETNAM WAR — NAMED HELICOPTER CREW CHIEF MEDAL GROUPING
JOHN T. UPDEGROVE
PURPLE HEART RECIPIENT — SURVIVOR OF FATAL 1967 HELICOPTER CRASH

A REMARKABLE PIECE OF DOCUMENTED VIETNAM WAR AVIATION HISTORY

Offered for sale is an outstanding Vietnam War-era United States Army medal and insignia grouping named to John T. Updegrove, a documented helicopter crew chief who served in Vietnam during 1966–1967.

Unlike ordinary assembled military medal displays, this grouping has an identifiable veteran whose service and involvement in a tragic wartime helicopter crash can be traced through published historical records.

THE SOLDIER BEHIND THE MEDALS

John Thomas Updegrove was born January 13, 1944, and served with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His military service included duty as a helicopter crew chief during 1966–1967.

According to the Rattler/Firebird Association’s November 2002 historical newsletter, Updegrove was the crew chief aboard a helicopter that crashed on February 6, 1967.

The crash claimed the lives of helicopter gunner PFC Thomas Nowack, pilot WO1 Russell Robbins, and several infantrymen.

UPDEGROVE SURVIVED THE CRASH.

This documented connection to a specific wartime aviation tragedy makes the grouping particularly significant to collectors of Vietnam helicopter operations and named military decorations.

A DECORATED VIETNAM VETERAN

Updegrove’s published obituary identifies him as the first resident of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, wounded in combat during the Vietnam War.

His documented military decorations included the Purple Heart, Air Medal, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Army Good Conduct Medal.

He passed away on March 7, 2000, and is buried at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Pennsylvania.
