Antique & Vintage Photographs EST. 1998 Muckross House Killarney Ireland Colonel Herbert Queen Victoria c1870s CdV Photo
This is a carte de visite photograph and is 4 x 2½ inches (102x63mm).
It shows a view of Muckross House, a Tudor-style mansion near Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. The photograph captures the grand facade of the house, with its many gables, mullioned windows, and a prominent porte-cochère at the entrance. The building is surrounded by manicured lawns and strategically placed shrubs and small trees.
The carte de visite is part of the "Gems of Irish Scenery" series by the photographer W. Lawrence of Dublin, as printed on the front of the mount. The reverse provides further details, identifying the location as "Muckross House, the Seat of Colonel Herbert, M.P." and noting the historic visit of Queen Victoria and the late Prince Consort in the autumn of 1861.
William Mervin Lawrence (1840-1932) was one of Ireland's most significant and prolific commercial photographers. He established his studio in Dublin in 1865 and became renowned for his extensive topographical views of Ireland. His vast collection of negatives, now held by the National Library of Ireland, forms an invaluable historical record of the country in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
