New reproduction of the first looped cartridge belt officially adopted by the US Army in 1876. Copying what soldier in the field had been doing for a decade, the Ordnance Department created this belt by attaching a canvas sleeve over a 1 3/4" leather belt. The sleeve has canvas loops for cartridges. The loops were varnished for durability, so they are very stiff when new.
One problem with the new belt: Holster and other belt equipment for 1 3/4" belts did not fit on it. This was eventually alleviated by the Forsythe holster with a larger belt loop. Meanwhile, soldiers often cut the belt loops open and laced them closed around the belt with a leather thong.
This is the Large size belt, which adjusts from 38-48 inches. It has 55 cartridge loops.
