Antique Mettlach Beer Stein #1149 – “Drinker on the Scale” (0.5 L, 1925)Villeroy & Boch • Stoneware • Etched Tapestry • Inlaid Lid
This exceptional antique German beer stein, produced by Villeroy & Boch Mettlach around 1925, is a superb example of the company’s renowned etched‑tapestry technique. Model #1149 features a wonderfully detailed image of drinker holds a scale. Design attributed to Ludwig Foltz II (1809-67). The inlaid lid with the hexagram, often mistaken for the Jewish Star of David, is actually a German brewing symbol seen frequently on beer steins produced through the early 20th century.
The design is signed by Ludowig Foltz II, one of Mettlach’s respected artists, adding both artistic and collectible value. The stoneware body displays crisp lines, rich coloration, and the unmistakable quality that made Mettlach steins world‑famous.
The stein is in mint condition, with the only note being a professionally repaired.
