Memento Mori Wooden Statue | Franciscan Friar 1700s Death Carving Figure | 13.6”:
$3709.08

An extraordinary and highly expressive wooden sculpture depicting a skeletal figure dressed in the traditional habit of a Franciscan friar, embodying the Christian concept of Memento Mori — “Remember That You Must Die.” The figure stands upon an architectural plinth, its skull emerging dramatically from the broad collar of a monastic robe. The skeletal right hand is raised, holding a long bone, while the opposite hand supports an open book upon which rests a small human skull. The friar\'s habit is secured at the waist by a knotted cord, traditionally associated with the Franciscan order and its vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. The voluminous garments are carved with vigorous, deeply modelled folds that cascade across the body, lending movement and theatrical intensity to the composition. The juxtaposition of the monastic habit, exposed skeleton, book and skull creates a powerful allegory of mortality, spiritual contemplation and the fleeting nature of earthly existence. The sculpture reflects the dramatic visual language of European Baroque religious art, in which representations of death served as reminders of the transience of worldly possessions and the importance of spiritual preparation. Its richly aged, dark brown-black surface accentuates the anatomical features and the complex interplay of light and shadow across the deeply carved drapery. The unusual iconography, expressive execution and compact yet commanding presence make this a particularly compelling example of European devotional and vanitas sculpture.
