Massive WWI Captain John E Smith Archive Scrapbook + 2 Framed Army Commissions 1917-1919 150th Machine Gun Battalion
Original World War I Captain’s Archive – One Family Collection
Offered here is an exceptional and highly personal World War I archive belonging to or belonging to the family of Captain John E. Smith, consisting of an original oversized scrapbook filled with military memorabilia together with two framed United States Army commission documents.
Unlike many WWI collections that have been broken apart over the years, this archive has remained together and documents one officer’s military service through original paperwork, correspondence, newspaper articles, telegrams and official documents.
Included are:
* More documents / newspaper clippings are included in the scrapbook that I did not have the space to photograph!
• Original cloth-covered scrapbook
• Original pages containing military memorabilia
• Original WWI newspaper clippings
• Military correspondence
• Camp Grant documents
• Typed and handwritten letters
• Telegrams
• Unit rosters and personnel lists
• Original signatures throughout
• Large newspaper pages featuring Company B and the 150th Machine Gun Battalion
• Two framed original Army commission certificates
The framed commissions include:
• Appointment as First Lieutenant
• Promotion to Captain of Infantry
• Official War Department documents bearing printed presidential commission text and period signatures.
The scrapbook appears to document Captain Smith’s service beginning in 1917 through his return home in 1919, including material relating to Camp Grant, Camp Devens, troop movements, fellow soldiers, newspaper coverage, and official military correspondence.
This is not a reproduction or modern compilation. The documents, telegrams, newspaper articles and correspondence are original period pieces assembled during or immediately following Captain Smith’s military service.
Condition is consistent with a 100+ year old archive. Expect age toning, foxing, edge wear, loose pages, fragile paper, and general handling wear. The scrapbook binding shows wear but remains together. Frames show normal cosmetic wear.
Please examine ALL photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
This would make an outstanding centerpiece for a WWI collection, military museum, archive, historian, or collector specializing in American Expeditionary Forces material.
