This is a beautiful Creamer made by the famous bone china manufacturer Spode, formerly Copeland Spode. The pattern is called Maritime Rose Blue, because it also was made with a yellow background and a pink background. The design is absolutely stunning, with a periwinkle blue background, accented with a raised or embossed white floral design that stands out against the periwinkle blue and the white china decorated with pink roses and rose buds. And notice the rose decorating the creamer on the inside of the spout! If you like fine china, the color blue, and pink roses, this creamer is lovely! It would be so pretty to display and to use when having tea or coffee with friends.
The Creamer holds 1 cup, stand 3 & 1/2 inches tall, and is 5 & 1/8 inches long from tip of spout to outer handle. It is in excellent vintage shape with no chips, cracks or crazing and I see no wear on the gold either.
This piece has no date stamped on the bottom, but the teacups and saucers that go went with this piece are stamped 1954, so this was probably made around then also. The green backstamp under the glaze on the bottom is “Spode Bone China England.”
I also have listed a sugar bowl in the same pattern. The last picture shows them together. Please note that the blue on the creamer is more intense than the blue on the sugar bowl.
Over 250 years ago the company was founded in 1770 by Josiah Spode, and the factory was set up in the heart of the Potteries – Stoke-on-Trent. Josiah Spode worked on the development of a new form of porcelain, originally calling it ‘Stoke China’, before establishing the name we know today as “Bone China”.
Spode was managed by the Copeland Family and both names were on pieces from 1847-1970. Starting around 1970, the brand name reverted to the name Spode only.
