Authentic early San Ildefonso Pueblo black-on-black pottery plate by renowned potter Maria Martinez and her husband Julian Martinez, dating to their collaborative period, circa 1925–1943. The underside is hand-incised “Marie + Julian,” the signature used on their decorated pottery during this period.

The feather-fan motif is particularly associated with Julian’s decoration. The New Mexico Museum of Art documents a circa-1925 Maria and Julian plate with a feather-fan motif derived from Mimbres design sources.
