Vintage Dutch commemorative plate marking the liberation of Maastricht by American forces on September 14, 1944 — the first Dutch city liberated in World War II. The blue-and-white transferware design shows an Allied soldier holding American and Dutch flags, framed by Maastricht's landmark church towers and the Sint Servaasbrug bridge over the Maas River, with the Dutch inscription "Bevrijding van Maastricht door de Amerikanen, 14 Sept. 1944" ("Liberation of Maastricht by the Americans"). Backstamped "Maastricht, The First Liberated City of Holland," with artist credits (E. Muller, pinx.; A. Sonneville, grav.) and the Petrus Regout & Co. Maastricht sphinx trademark. Petrus Regout was one of the most prominent Dutch pottery manufacturers and began producing these commemorative plates immediately following the city's liberation.
