NORTH GERMANY FEBRUARY- MARCH 1945.Map showing the advance of Montgomery\'s 21st Army Group across the North German plain to the Baltic coast in the final months of the war. Although the German defences were greatly reduced, and in many cases now reliant on young boys and old men, there was much tough fighting between the Rhineand the Elbe. On 1 April units of the First and Third Armies completed the encirclement of the Ruhr and on the 12th the Ninth Army reached the Elbe, where they halted to await the advance of the Red Army from the east. Army Group H under Blaskowitz was then trapped in the north.
