MIKE DEODATO JR. ORIGINAL WONDER WOMAN ART
Original Signed 11" x 17" Illustration • Acquired Approximately 25 Years Ago
Offered here is an exceptional piece of original Wonder Woman artwork by legendary comic artist Mike Deodato Jr., featuring a spectacular full-figure depiction of Wonder Woman in action.
This is an original hand-drawn piece of artwork measuring approximately 11 x 17 inches, the traditional size of professional comic art board.
The artwork features Wonder Woman deflecting gunfire with her bracelets in a dramatic action pose, with Deodato's trademark flowing hair, exaggerated movement and powerful figure work. Unlike a quick convention head sketch or small character drawing, Wonder Woman occupies virtually the entire board and the piece is extensively rendered.
The artwork is signed “Mike Deodato Jr.” directly on the piece.
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I acquired this piece approximately 20+ years ago, at the first Wizard World Los Angeles when I was actively collecting original comic book artwork.
Because Wonder Woman is depicted topless, my belief is that this was created as a private commission or unpublished illustration rather than artwork intended for publication by DC Comics. I cannot independently verify the exact date it was drawn or its original purpose, so I am selling it simply as an original signed Mike Deodato Jr. Wonder Woman illustration.
What makes the piece particularly striking is its size and composition. This isn't a small sketch. It is a full 11 x 17-inch original, with Wonder Woman dominating the page in an action-oriented image.
WHY MIKE DEODATO JR. AND WONDER WOMAN MATTER
Mike Deodato Jr. is one of the major comic-book artists of the last three decades, with an extraordinary career spanning DC Comics, Marvel Comics and other major publishers.
His credits include work on Wonder Woman, The Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, New Avengers, Dark Avengers, Secret Avengers, Thor, Incredible Hulk, Thunderbolts, Elektra, Batman, The Flash, Wolverine, X-Men and numerous other major characters and titles.
But Wonder Woman holds a particularly important place in Deodato's career.
Deodato has described Wonder Woman as his major opportunity at DC in 1994. His dynamic, highly stylized approach brought the visual energy of early-'90s comics to the character, and his run became one of the defining periods of his early American career. Deodato has said that sales increased dramatically during his tenure, after which Marvel hired him to an exclusive contract. PBS
His association with the character remains strong enough that DC has subsequently published collections specifically devoted to his work, including Wonder Woman by Mike Deodato, while his DC bibliography also includes Wonder Woman: The Contest and Wonder Woman: A Celebration of 75 Years. DC
For an original-art collector, that makes a Wonder Woman image by Deodato considerably more significant than simply having a famous artist draw a famous character. This is one of the characters most closely associated with the period that established Deodato as a major American comic-book artist.
