The large postcard front features Linda McCartney\'s photograph“Ghost,” depicting her husband, Paul McCartney, legendary musician and former member of The Beatles.
AN UNUSUAL IMAGE OF PAUL McCARTNEYWhat makes this particular image especially intriguing is that it is adouble-exposure photograph. The resulting image gives Paul an almost spectral, ghost-like appearance—a wonderfully appropriate visual interpretation of the photograph\'s title,“Ghost.”
I have looked through available online collections and examples of Linda McCartney\'s photography and haverarely, if ever, encountered this particular image. I have seen other published photographs of Linda and Paul with their children, including the memorable Halloween image in which Linda and Paul appear wrapped together in a yellow sheet, but I have not come across this distinctive double-exposure photograph in those collections. I cannot make a definitive claim about its rarity or publication history, but its relative absence from the examples I have been able to locate makes this an especially interesting image for collectors.
A PERSONAL CONNECTION TO THE EXHIBITIONIwas working as anart consultant at the gallerywhen this exhibition took place. This postcard therefore has a personal connection to the exhibition itself—it was original promotional material from the gallery during the 1989 show, rather than a postcard acquired years later from an unknown source.
Paul and Linda later performed together as members ofWings, making this photograph an especially interesting intersection of Linda\'s career as a photographer and her life with one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. Linda McCartney was much more than the wife of Paul McCartney. She was an accomplished photographer whose work captured musicians, family, animals, landscapes, and intimate everyday moments with a distinctive and personal eye.
