Unusual and highly decorative hand-painted Limoges porcelain match holder / match safe, designed as a tall European townhouse.
Unlike a conventional Limoges trinket box, this architectural piece was specifically designed for storing and striking matches. The hinged upper section opens to reveal a deep porcelain compartment for matches, while the broad textured gray roof serves as the match striker.
The elaborate building is decorated on all sides with hand-painted architectural and street details, including red brickwork, arched openings, windows with curtains, raised columns and masonry, and tiny figures. Its approximately 6-inch height gives it considerably more presence than the small Limoges hinged boxes commonly encountered.
The upper section is surrounded by ornate gold/brass-tone metal mounts and closes with a dimensional flower-form clasp. The underside is hand inscribed:
“Peint main
Limoges”
Approximate measurements:
6” tall × 4” wide
A wonderful piece for a collection of Limoges porcelain, antique and vintage match holders, match safes, architectural miniatures, French decorative arts, or unusual smoking and fireside accessories.
