Despite its nickname, the “saber-toothed tiger” is not closely related to modern tigers or cats, belonging instead to the extinct Machairodontinae subfamily. Smilodon lived in the Americas from roughly 2.5 million to 8,200 years ago. Fossils from the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles represent the largest collection of specimens for this genus. Three species are recognized today: S. gracilis, S. fatalis, and S. populator, with the latter two likely descended from S. gracilis. The genus name means “scalpel tooth,” reflecting the iconic long, curved canine teeth of this apex predator.Key Features:• Life-size replica: approx. 20cm (L) x 12cm (W) x 13cm (H)• Two-piece model with removable cranium and jaw• Weighted and textured for a realistic, fossil-like feel• Assembled and finished by hand in Western Australia• Perfect for natural history education, collections, and museum displayPart of our prehistoric collection — designed to educate and inspire with the wonders of Earth’s ancient past.
