DESCRIPTION
Vintage postcard depicting LB&SCR No. 422, an H2-class 4-4-2 Atlantic steam locomotive associated with the all-Pullman Southern Belle service between London Victoria and Brighton.
Built at Brighton Works in July 1911, No. 422 was one of six H2 Atlantics designed for the railway’s premier passenger services. The LB&SCR promoted the Southern Belle as “the most luxurious train in the world.”
The scene dates approximately from 1911–1922, based on the locomotive’s construction date and the end of the independent LB&SCR at the 1923 Grouping. The postcard’s exact publication date is not confirmed.
