A beautiful and substantial square celadon pottery dish featuring a soft jade/celadon blue-green glaze with an intricate overall crackle and raised floral and scrolling foliage decoration.
The molded botanical design has the quiet, dimensional quality associated with traditional Korean celadon. The underside bears an Asian character mark. Visual/image comparison has suggested a possible Korean Goryeo connection; however, the maker, exact age and period have not been independently authenticated. It is therefore being offered conservatively as Korean Goryeo-style celadon rather than as a confirmed Goryeo Dynasty artifact.
This gorgeous art dish came from the Gay Mayo estate. She was a world renowned professor and teacher of Ikebana. She was an avid collector of Asian vintage and antiques and lived in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Its combination of estate provenance, marked underside, square architectural form, crackled celadon glaze and beautifully modeled floral relief makes it an especially appealing piece for a collection of Korean or Asian ceramics.
