VINTAGE MID-CENTURY CREATIVE KOKESHI SCULPTURE PAIR BY MASTER KATASE KAIHEI (1978)

An exceptional pair of spherical Creative Kokeshi (Sosaku Kokeshi) wooden sculptures crafted by the celebrated Japanese artist Katase Kaihei (片瀬快平, 1922-2015). Born in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, Katase was a distinguished modernist sculptor awarded the prestigious Prime Minister\'s Award (内閣総理大臣賞) in 1954, cementing his legacy in post-war Japanese contemporary folk art.

DESIGN & PROVENANCEThis striking pair captures the poignant Oyako (Mother & Child) motif. Each piece is skillfully turned into a rare spherical globe form, wrapped in vibrant vermilion red layered with bold calligraphic brushstrokes and adorned with gold and silver Ume (plum blossom) crests—traditional symbols of resilience, purity, and good fortune. The nestled child peeking from the side creates a warm, protective dynamic between the two sculptures.

Artist Signature: Hand-carved hallmark signature 片瀬快平 (Katase Kaihei) on the base of the larger mother sculpture.

Provenance & Date: Original vintage hand-inscribed ink marking dating the piece to March 11, Showa 53 (53. 3. 11 / March 11, 1978), acquired at the renowned Atami Korakuen Hotel (熱海後楽園ホテル) in Shizuoka Prefecture.
