Artist Biography
Jiro Kinjo (金城次郎, 1911–2004) was a celebrated Okinawan ceramic artist born in Naha.
He began working as a potter at a young age under Eitoku Arakaki and encountered Shoji Hamada during this period. He was also strongly influenced by the Japanese Mingei folk-craft movement associated with Soetsu Yanagi.
After World War II, he established his own workshop in Tsuboya in 1946. In 1972, he moved his base of production to Yomitan Village, where he built his own climbing kiln.
In 1985, he was designated a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property for “Ryukyu Pottery”, becoming Okinawa\'s first Living National Treasure.
His work is especially known for its lively fish and shrimp motifs, along with the warm, functional character associated with Okinawan ceramic traditions.
