Japanese Buddhist Mokugyo Carved Wood Fish Drum Vtg Temple Decor 19in
This impressive piece was carved from a single piece of wood. The mouth contains a skillfully carved captive wooden ball made from the same block of wood as the fish. The ball is loose and moves freely within the mouth, but the carefully shaped opening permanently retains it inside. This demonstrates particularly clever carving and craftsmanship.
The fish features deeply carved scales, fins, large eyes, decorative circular side panels, gold-painted teeth, and a black finish with deep red highlights. It retains its attached hanging rope.
Fish-shaped mokugyo were traditionally suspended and struck as percussion instruments to signal activities at Buddhist temples. The fish also symbolizes wakefulness in Buddhist tradition.
Measures approximately 19 inches long. Overall good condition with no visible damage or repairs. No striking mallet is included.
