Antique Japanese Banko Ware Figural Monkey – Hand-Modeled Ceramic Sculpture with Fruit
The figure has an expressive, almost whimsical face with exposed teeth, carefully modeled hands and feet, and extensively textured/incised fur. The pottery has a beautifully aged surface with warm decorative colors. The back is partially flattened, and the piece has the characteristic highly sculptural, folk-art quality found in Japanese figural Banko pottery.
Period: Believed to be late Meiji / early Taishō period, approximately 1890–1920
Condition:The piece displays age-related crazing, glaze wear, discoloration and surface wear consistent with an older ceramic object. There are areas of wear and imperfections from age and manufacture. Please note that I have not attempted to clean, refinish or restore the surface.
