James Upshall S Grade Smooth Dublin – Hand Made in Tilshead, England

James Upshall was founded in 1978 in the village of Tilshead, England, by Barry Jones and Ken Barnes, two carvers who came up through Charatan's freehand workshop. They carried the classic English handmade tradition forward, and the Dublin, long Charatan's signature shape, became one of theirs as well.

This is an S grade, the first tier of the graded James Upshall line, sitting just above the Tilshead line (grades run S, A, P, B, G, E, X, XX). S grades are known for their deep claret stain. This one has no size group or FH stamp, which is consistent with earlier production, likely the 1980s.

Flame grain climbs the sides of the bowl, with birdseye on the rim and heel, all under that rich claret finish. It's a forward-canted English Dublin with a gently bent, tapered stem, a roomy chamber, and a satisfying heft in the hand. It's well suited to English and Balkan blends.

Stamping:

• Left shank: "S" beside JAMES UPSHALL in an oval cartouche

• Right shank: TILSHEAD / ENGLAND / MADE BY HAND

• Stem: JU logo in white

Condition:

Fully cleaned, sanitized, and restored. The briar has a deep, even shine, and the stamping is crisp and legible on both sides. The rim is clean with sharp edges and no char, dents, or burns. The chamber is clean with a light patina from prior use and no heat damage. The stem is glossy black with no oxidation or tooth marks, and the JU logo is crisp. The draw is open and clear.
