ORIGINAL JAMES HARLAN AUTOGRAPH — U.S. SENATOR & SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOROffered is an original handwritten autograph of James Harlan (1820–1899), prominent Iowa Republican, U.S. Senator, and U.S. Secretary of the Interior during the Civil War/Reconstruction era.
Harlan represented Iowa in the United States Senate from 1855–1865 and again from 1867–1873. He resigned his Senate seat in 1865 after being appointed Secretary of the Interior. His nomination was confirmed by the Senate on March 9, 1865, under President Abraham Lincoln, and Harlan assumed the Cabinet position under President Andrew Johnson in May 1865.He later returned to the Senate in 1867, where he served as chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.
