JS50 40/8 Op Compass WWII WW2 Western Desert RAF cover signed FM Carver DSO MC For Sale

JS50 cover produced to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Operation Compass in the Western Desert December 1940 - February 1941. Cover depicts 16th & 17th Brigades assault on Bardia., the 6th Australian Division beginning the attack on Tobruck, 7th armoured division at Nibeiwa and 19th Australian armoured division at Nibeiwa. Cover bears 20p Military cross Gallantry stamp cancelled with BFPS 2239 for the 50th Anniversary of Operation Compass. Cover has been flown from RAF Lyneham in Hercules to Akrotiri and on to Bahrain as part of the Hercules airlift in support of British Forces engaged on operation Desert Storm in the Gulf

Field Marshal The Lord Carver GCB CBE DSO MC

Lord Carver is a former Chief of the Defence Staff and a noted military writer. He was born on 24 April1915. He was commisioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Tank Corps in 1935 and sailed with his regiment to Egypt in 1938. He served throughou the North African Campaign, Italy and North West Europe. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1941 and the DSO and bar in 1943. He was mentioned in Despatches twice.
He was Chief of Staff to the Commander in Chief East Africa 1954-55 during the Ma Mau emergency. In 1960 Briagdier Carver was appointed to command the 6th Infantry Brigade in BAOR, and was promted to Major General and GOC 3rd Infantry Division in 1962. In 1966 he was promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed Commander Far East Land Forces. In 1971 he became chief of staff and was promoted to Field Marshal in 1973.
