JOSIAH DWIGHT WHITNEY SIGNED SLIP, GEOLOGIST, U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEYS, HARVARD:
$350.00

HE WAS THE GEOLOGIST IN CHARGE OF THE SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF THE UNITED STATES SOURCES OF MINERAL RAW MATERIALS AND THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED

JOSIAH DWIGHT WHITNEY(1819-96) SIGNED SLIP, “Josiah D. Whitney, Cambridge, Mass”, on a slip 3.5 x 1.5 removed from a document, by the American geologist, professor of geology at Harvard and founded their school of mines, and chief of the California Geological Survey. Through his travels and studies in the principal mining regions of the United States, Whitney became the foremost authority of his day on the economic geology (concerned with earth materials that can be used for economic and/or industrial purposes) of the U. S. Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous 48 United States, and the Whitney glacier in the United States, on Mount Shasta, were both named after him by members on the survey. He participated in geological surveys in Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin in the 1850’s. In 1860 he was appointed the state geologist of California and undertook a comprehensive geologic survey of the state. His team began a survey that covered not only geology and geography but also botany, zoology, and paleontology. He published two volumes on paleontology at a time when the state legislature, providing the funding for the survey, really was more interested in finding gold, so they reduced his funding, and eventually cancelled the survey. In spite of financial problems and political difficulties, the survey was significant not only for its published results, but also because of the men involved, and the survey methods developed – in particular, topographical mapping by triangulation. In fine condition, with minor age toning. #12542
